Our elders deserve respect, love, and, importantly, protection. Unfortunately, they are also often targeted for financial exploitation. Financial elder abuse, the illegal or improper use of an elder’s money or property, can be devastating, leaving them emotionally and financially vulnerable. Recognizing the signs is crucial for early intervention and safeguarding their well-being.

Financial elder abuse can be subtle and take many forms. Here are eight crucial warning signs to watch for:

1. Unexplained Changes in Banking Activity:

  • Look for unusual withdrawals, large transfers, or new accounts opened without your loved one’s knowledge.
  • Pay attention to unpaid bills, overdraft charges, or bounced checks, which could indicate unauthorized spending.

2. Pressure to Sign Documents They Don’t Understand:

  • Be wary of sudden changes to wills, trusts, or power of attorney documents, especially if your loved one seems confused or pressured.
  • Encourage them to seek independent legal advice before signing anything they don’t fully comprehend.

3. Isolation and Limited Contact:

  • If your loved one becomes increasingly isolated, especially from trusted friends and family, it could be a sign of manipulation or control by an abuser.
  • Be mindful if they seem hesitant to discuss their finances or show anxiety during conversations about money.

4. Unexplained Gifts or Loans:

  • Be cautious of excessive gifts or loans to people your loved one barely knows, particularly if they seem hesitant or uncomfortable about it.
  • Encourage open communication and express any concerns you have about their financial dealings.

5. Sudden Changes in Living Arrangements:

  • Moving in with family members or caregivers unexpectedly, especially if accompanied by pressure to change financial documents or sign over assets, can be a red flag.
  • Check-in on their living situation regularly and ensure it feels safe and voluntary.

6. Missing Valuables or Personal Belongings:

  • Unexplained disappearance of cash, jewelry, or other valuables may indicate theft or coercion.
  • Keep an inventory of their belongings and monitor for any suspicious disappearance.

7. Unrealistic Investment Schemes:

  • Be wary of promises of high returns with minimal risk, especially if they target vulnerabilities or fear tactics.
  • Encourage them to consult with a trusted financial advisor before making any investment decisions.

8. Unexplained Changes in Healthcare:

  • Sudden changes in medical care providers, medication, or unauthorized use of health insurance benefits could be signs of financial exploitation.
  • Stay informed about their healthcare decisions and ensure they have trusted advocates by their side.

Remember:

  • These signs are not definitive, and elder abuse can be complex. If you suspect something is wrong, trust your gut and investigate further.
  • Speak to your loved one directly but do so gently and avoid accusations. Offer support and help them understand you’re there to protect them.
  • Seek professional help: Contact Adult Protective Services, a trusted financial advisor, or an elder law attorney for guidance and support.

The National Center on Elder Abuse reminds us, “Preventing financial exploitation is critical to protecting the financial security and well-being of older adults.” By staying informed, recognizing the signs, and taking action, we can create a safer environment for our cherished elders and protect them from harm.

By staying vigilant and informed, we can safeguard our elders and ensure they enjoy the respect, security, and financial well-being they deserve. If you suspect your loved one is being taken advantage of financially or otherwise, please contact your local law enforcement.
